Summary: Buster Moon, a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal optimist — okay, maybe a bit of a scoundrel — who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition. Five lead contestants emerge: A mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons, a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright, an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets, a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies, and a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo. Each animal arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.

Sing (2016) is a well made film full of horrible, horrible morals. [SPOILERS]

Main Post:

I recently came across this film because a friend of mine loves it to death and insisted I watch it. Now don't get me wrong, on the first look this is a very cute film. The animation is spot on, the musical moments are very well done, and the singing characters are all pretty relatable, if bland. But ever since I watched it, something has gnawed away at me and undermined the memory of the cute singing animals, and I finally figured out what it was:

THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A GIGANTIC ASSHOLE

Let's start from the beginning:

In the opening scene, we have Buster Moon the Koala trying to fend off overdue bills to keep his theatre running. That is a scene many people are familiar with in their lives as well as on screen, but the film also includes a shot of some irate workers who haven't been paid for Moon's last show. To avoid the mob of people who are breaking down his doors to get their wages, Moon flees the theatre. Takes the back way out and runs. We never see these workers again, so we can only conclude that fobbing off people's requests to be paid for their hard labour doesn't lose him any sleep.

The plot centres around a singing contest. This was Moon's last ditch attempt to save his theatre, and a printing error leads to the advertisements showing a $100,000 prize instead of $1,000. The Koala barely has the $1k to pay off the original prize, but when he hears of the printing error, does he back down and admit to the error? Of course not, he just ploughs on ahead and tells everyone he has the money. Obviously this is fraudulent, and the raised expectations cause some of the characters to make life-altering decisions.

A couple of scenes later, this Koala has to steal power from a neighbouring theatre to keep his lights and sound systems on. Not only that, but he later steals municipal water. Not especially egregious, but still dirty.

But wait, what does he steal the water for? This Koala, in a depraved effort to attract enough capital from an aged performer's nostalgia to pay a single one of his bills, turns his stage into an aquarium. He uses municipal water to fill it, then uses fucking window glass for the walls. In anybody's book this is an insane risk to be putting all your cast and crew under, just so he doesn't have to go broke. Why couldn't he fix up his old stage? The collapse of the theatre would have undoubtedly killed and maimed people, but the film shows the real tragedy as being the loss of memories and opportunities for Moon and the contestants.

Naturally this all falls apart, the theatre literally gets washed away and Buster Moon goes to prison. Just kidding, he suffers no consequences besides a bruised ego, which is then fixed when one of the contestants hires some scabs (I'm assuming this part, but would any teamster union in the world go there now?) to make a makeshift stage in the wreck of the theatre and the show goes off a treat.

At no point does the koala seem to give a fuck about his contestants beyond the money they might make him. They are almost unanimously shy people not used to performances which makes them easy for him to manipulate, and manipulate he does in order to keep them all there without mentioning the money they will not be receiving.

Now look, this might all seem petty. It's an animated film aimed at families, who cares if things aren't the way they are in the real world?

My issue is that in the end, the story of Buster Moon is THE story of Sing. While the singers have some minor character development as a result of their performances, the film put Moon forward as the hero. His theatre is rebuilt by a capital injection from the rich ex-performer and he is once again living his dream of running his own shows. He suffers no consequences, endures no hardship or punishment for his transgressions besides brief public humiliation, while he has left a trail of underpaid, defrauded and presumably injured and dead people behind him. He has made the lives of so many people worse and made very few lives better besides his own.

So far from the feel good ~follow your dreams~ moral that you'd expect from this film, what it actually shows is that kids, you can get anywhere you want if you're prepared to steal, beg, lie and luck your way through it. You can stiff your workers, you can steal from your neighbours with impunity, you can drain public resources, defraud investors and consumers and endanger people's lives but at the end of the day, if you get that cheddar, it's all ok!

This guy, this maniac of a Koala, is an incredibly unlikeable character to be heading up such an easy-watching film. Instead of being a gutsy, go gettem' type that does what he can to succeed while still being compassionate, he becomes the kind of unhinged scumbag that Ebenezer Scrooge, the Monopoly Man and Jeff Bezos would proudly rub shoulder with. Perhaps the reason why this film is made with cute animals is because if the characters he fucked over were human, the audience would be scandalised and wondering why he wasn't in prison.

Why the writers and editors didn't realise this is beyond me, because it probably would not have taken much to make the Koala a nice enough guy. Then again, maybe it is supposed to be a subtle reflection of our times?

eli5 can anyone technically be able to sing?

Main Post:

If I practiced enough or got the right type of training, would I technically be able to sing well like some of our greatest singers? Is there an anatomical difference in their vocals cords that differentiates singers from people who cant sing?

Top Comment: Professional opera singer here. If I practiced enough or got the right type of training Yes, you could. Everyone can sing, but your laryngeal muscles have to be built up just like any other set of muscles, and very few people have the self-control and dedication to build them up if they're not naturally strong (and as with other types of muscle, there's a wide variation on how people develop when they're not focused on muscle development). Your laryngeal cartilage also ossifies (becomes bone, essentially) around your early 30s, which permanently alters the way your voice works, one of the side effects of which is that if you haven't been exercising your voice often previous to that, it will be almost impossible to significantly improve its flexibility. Lastly, you use your voice a lot throughout your life, and you develop extremely robust muscle memory for that system within your body. All of that muscle memory affects your singing, and certain habits and memory patterns can make healthy singing much more difficult, again extending the amount of time it takes to learn. Almost everyone can sing ("almost" because there are always biological outliers with insurmountable obstructions). Not everyone can learn within a reasonable timeframe/cost for them, and not everyone has the discipline it takes to actually spend that time/money. Which is why I continue to get paid. :) (I should add that I also do not have that self-control or discipline. I just lucked out on having naturally dense musculature and a propensity to scream/yell a lot as a kid. 😂)

Sings 1 and 2 have awful messages

Main Post:

I've half-watched (or at least listened to) Sing and Sing 2 multiple times, and apparently the message is "lying to people to advance your own goals/career is fine as long as it works out in the end?" Buster generally treats people as disposable from the get-go, and when he finds out that his advertised prize money was wrong ($100,000 instead of the $1,000 he actually has), he just chooses to screw everyone over by pretending he has a hundred grand. And when they find out, they just forgive him for no reason and continue on?

In Sing 2, he does it again by claiming both that he has rights to use a famous song in his show and that he's personal friends with the artist. Neither of these things are true, but the artist sees the show and chooses to join in, validating the lie. Buster has no consequences, learns no lessons, and is ultimately rewarded with success for his choices. He's a crappy dude who does not deserve his friends.

I recognize that I may have missed important plot points because I wasn't really paying attention, but I have very strong opinions about this!

Top Comment: FINALLY someone else who gets it. I still love Sing 2 though

Can anyone learn how to sing?

Main Post:

Can anyone learn how to sing?

As a professional musician that plays instruments, I have never agreed with the belief that someone is naturally talented. Because I believe that with enough work, time and effort (while being mindful) anyone can learn how to play guitar or saxophone or whatever really well.

However, does this translate to the voice? Many vocal coaches preach that anyone can sing as long as they learn the proper techniques and practice with guidance.

However, I honestly think that I have a terrible singing voice that no vocal coach will be able to improve. But I fundamentally respect the singers and everything we can do with their voice and I'm very curious to learn how to sing and treat it like approaching my saxophone.

What do people think, are there any singers out there who honestly thought that their voice was bad until they receive guidance? Is a good voice a thing you either have or don't have?

Thanks for reading

*Hey, This question is probably best answered by vocal coaches. I'd love to hear from someone that approaches the voice as if it is their instrument or teaches people how to hone their vocal instrument.

Top Comment:

Everyone can sing, not everyone can sing like Freddie Mercury.

If you practice your instrument enough, you could feasibly have a level of technique that rivals a Jimmie Hendrix or a Miles Davis, but you will never be able to practice your voice to have the range or sound of a Robert Plant or Michael Jackson.

But you can absolutely learn to sing in a pleasing way. There are countless of artists that do not have traditionally pleasing voices or techniques, but that use what they have to the max and deliver unique and entertaining vocal performances that in enjoyability can rival any singer in history.

I do find that the more I sing, the better it sounds, so practice definitely helps.
